ACT4Growth is a European Citizens Initiative (ECI). The campaign requires one million signatures from EU citizens in the next 6 months to pursue its ultimate objective of promoting gender equality and the advancement of women at EU government level. WIL is partnering up with ACT4Growth. We invite all interested members, emerging leaders and friends to take this opportunity and use their power as a citizen to change policy.

WIL was honoured to welcome Ms. Nadia Calviño, Deputy Director General for Financial Services Policy at DG Internal Market and Services (European Commission) on November 28th for a great session on EU Integration, Economics and Financial reforms – with a special focus on the banking union.

Paulina Dejmek is responsible for financial services and a member of the Cabinet of EU Commissioner Michael Barnier. During the Swedish EU Presidency in 2009, Paulina was seconded to the Swedish Permanent Representation as financial attaché. Paulina is a Swedish and Czech citizen, she holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of Lund, Sweden, and a PhD from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.

On 9th July 2013, WIL acted as official partner for the book launch of “Entrepreneurs need Freedom”, written by Member of the European Parliament Dr. Paul Rübig. The launch took place at the European Parliament in front of an exclusive audience invested in the growth and flourishing of SMEs in Europe, and WIL had the honor to interview the MEP before the event.

On the occasion of the International “Girls in ICT” Day on 25th April, the European Internet Foundation (EIF) and the European Commission hosted a joint lunch meeting in the European Parliament, followed by a hearing on “Women in ICT”. WIL members Sylvie Laffarge, Director of Corporate Affairs at Microsoft EMEA, and Afke Schaart, Senior Director of EU Institutional Relations at Microsoft, report from the event.

WIL member Viktorija Šmatko-Abaza joined the European Commission's Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities in March 2007 as Director responsible for audit, controls and evaluation. She is now the Directorate’s Principal Adviser.

WIL Vice-president Pervenche Beres is Chairwoman of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament. Appointed as a rapporteur of the EP Special Committee on the Economic, Financial and Social Crisis, Pervenche led the efforts of the EP to establish the origins of the crisis and recommend solutions to avoid its repetition. Her report was adopted by the EP in July 2011. Some of its conclusions are highlighted in our interview with Pervenche.

The European Commission has placed sustainable growth at the core of its strategy for 2020. This strategy must foster ways to cut green house gas by 20%, while heavily supporting R&D in a more and more competitive global market. While targets seem extremely challenging, it is worth acknowledging that more women are sharing decision-making powers in key sectors for the future.

Sixtine Bouygues will be taking a thrilling new role in the Directorate-General for Communication, where she will make the best use of her previous experience. As the new acting Director for Communication Actions and Head of Unit Communication Strategy and Projects, her responsibilities will concern research, media monitoring and analysis, audiovisual services, media networks, and the development of the inter-institutional website Europa.
